Family Counseling Center F.A.Q.
Counseling is a collaborative, confidential process where the individual is cared about, understood, and empowered. In addition, their sense of safety and trust are both highly valued aspects of the counseling relationship and counseling process.
All of these fundamental characteristics are essential elements of the counseling process, and feelings/concerns about these features are encouraged to be openly expressed. Through this process, the client will be able to grow, learn and make appropriate changes in their life.
Counseling can help individuals to gain a greater understanding of the challenges that have brought them significant emotional turmoil. A counselor can also provide support, guidance, and insight into challenging issues like:
- guilt
- doubt
- anxiety
- despair
Additional benefits of counseling may include the following:
- Obtain a better understanding of self, relationships, and goals
- Learn healthy ways to cope with depression, anxiety, grief, fears, stress, etc.
- Manage hardships, grief, loss, trauma, and other emotional difficulties
- Discover resolutions to challenging issues
- Greater satisfaction with personal relationships
- Make positive changes in patterns of behavior and thought processes
- Increase in self-esteem and self-confidence
The length of counseling is determined on an individual basis by the goals set by the client working with their counselor.
Typically, counseling will be terminated when the client’s goals have been met, the issue which led the client to counsel has been resolved, or symptoms have been reduced or are manageable.
We do not accept insurance at this time. We have a sliding scale. Our fees for counseling are determined by an individual’s household income and the number of people in their home. Our goal is to not turn anyone away because of lack of availability to pay.
If you have insurance, you may choose to use your insurance, in which case you can request a receipt of services that you submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement.
Another commonly used method for making counseling more affordable is to set up a payment plan.
We do provide a good faith estimate which is in line with federal guidelines.
Yes, The Family Counseling Center offers clients a sliding scale to keep costs more feasible. Our sliding scale is based on household income and family size. The Family Counseling Center’s mission is to help those in need, regardless of financial ability.
We will work with you on setting a session rate that will fit your budget without causing you more financial distress.
It is important to note that our sliding scale only applies to counseling sessions and not to other services that may be required.

A session generally lasts 45-50 minutes, with the ability to request a longer duration if needed. The number of sessions needed are based on the clients situation and the recommendations of the counselor. It could be once a week, once every other week, or even once a month. However, some people in crisis or extreme distress may need more than once session per week, at least until the crisis passes.
Materials are typically provided for continued growth between counseling sessions. These materials are the clients’ to keep for future reference after counseling in no longer needed. For counseling to “work,” you must be an active participant. . . both in and outside of the counseling sessions.
Each session is tailored to the individual and their needs.
The Family Counseling Center is H.E.P.A. Certified. In general, communications and information shared between a client and counselor are confidential and cannot be disclosed to anyone without written consent. However, ethical and legal codes require that confidentiality MUST be broken in cases where the imminent danger to self and others is present. The following are the limits of confidentiality:
- Suspected child abuse concerning a client under the age of 18. The counselor is mandated to report the abuse immediately to the appropriate authorities.
- Suspected elder abuse concerning a client over the age of 65. The counselor is required to report the abuse to the appropriate authorities.
- If a client threatens serious bodily harm to another individual. The counselor must report this to the police and inform the intended victim.
